Late Childhood

Issues

Children who are rejected by pro-social peers and who become isolated from positive social interactions are more susceptible to the influence of deviant peers including more aggressive youth.  They are likely to be involved in more anti-social behaviour (defiance, intimidation, bullying, verbal abuse and threats).

Goals

Develop interventions that create reinforced opportunities to further develop age appropriate social skills necessary for the development and maintenance of positive relationships with peers and adults.

Provide information to families, schools, organizations and community groups on the services and resources available that promote healthy development and positive relationships.

Key Strategies

Identify and share screening and assessment tools for identifying children and youth in need of attention and intervention.

Identify and share information about programs that exist in the community that can help intervene and promote healthy development and positive relationships.

Identify and share practice strategies for building supportive relationships and opportunities with and around children and youth.

Identify and share policy and resource requirements needed to support these programs and practices.

Small opportunities are often the beginning of great enterprises.
